I started to be a little sad when you left Italy, you know, it's the idea that you were here... So sad that this tour is ending. So sad that the tour diary is ending... as someone said before, I'm a get-a-lifer too as I couldn't miss any of your daily entries. So sad I won't learn new words like "curfew" or "tarmac"! It is a great tour (whatever someone could think) and I really hope that you'll be on the road again very very soon.
A praise: could you please post the NS competition right answers in the next days? I'd like to know how many further English lessons do I have to book after realizing what huge mess I've probably done!
Enjoy the last show, the last runner and the first day of your well deserved holidays! >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> Thank you so much Isabella. It's as much fun for me as it was for you. I will post the NS review as soon as I can.

Guy "May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home
And may the hand of a friend always be near"
I realize that you don't always want the wind directly at your back while windsurfing...but I felt that the Irish Prayer seemed appropriate for all of you coming off a long road trip. Hopefully the warm rays of the sun will help heal your wife's back.
Thanks for everything! Marty >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> Many thanks Marty, a lovely sentiment

Hi Guy! Just wanted to thank you and all the band for last night's show in Vista Alegre Bullring in Bilbao. It was one of the happiest nights in my life, what a show, what a band, what a sound. The weak thing was that "only" 14 songs were performed, brilliantly, but the show went off so quickly, my dad told me that he would be listening to you all night long, and I would be too!
Thanks so much and enjoy your holidays.
Looking forward to see you back in Spain in 2012! cheers! >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> Many thanks, a lovely evening

I note in the picture of Richard Bennett that the red fender he is playing has the signature of MK on the end of it.. is that called the neck? I have little knowledge of musical instruments. Is this guitar an off the shelf "signature" model? So can anyone buy this model in a shop please? Or is this a vintage model that MK has signed personally? >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> It's an off the shelf signature model available to all with Mark's signature of the headstock.

Doc, in the 70's many British artists & bands like the Stones fled Britain in self imposed "exile" because of the ultra high British Tax Laws. This never seemed to affect Dire Straits and both you & MK have lived happily in London for quite some time. What changed? >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> Nothing, we don't have a problem with paying tax.

Guy i have question about the song Marbletown. I hope you do not find this strange and i know you are all very good at what you're doing but how much practise goes in a song like this? I really love this version you played on this tour, almost 9 minutes long i believe. Beautiful song.... I always wonder how songs in concert sometimes take longer than on the record but what you did with Marbletown.... can you tell us something about that.... Thanks... >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> None. The song is played differently every night, we all 'play off' each other and no-one quite knows where we are going, what fun. It's worth buying all the Simfy downloads just for this song alone.

Hi guy, strange question here.
I remember the first time when I was I hearing sailing to philadelphia (the song) that during the 2nd verse my ear (at least mine) was hoping that the chorus enters after the lyrics says "In the forest of the Iroquois..."( tipical AABA form) but not, the songs repeats one verse more (AABAA form). The thing I like is that the lyrcs there says "Now hold your head up Mason" And it fits perfectly with the feeling that my ear had.
it this was previously thought, or just came out? or maybe its just my ear and I am a little crazy?! >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> it's called an arrangement

Hey doc! Leapfrogging or/and Bockspringen, that’s the question. In my understanding while e.g. crossing a street, half of a group of frogs relaxing for the next jump and the other group is „airborne“: fly high and watch the traffic. Then the relaxed group jumps and so far. By the way: as you can see on the surface, watching and take care of the traffic is not a special frog talent. However, is that meant by leapfrogging? I know Bockspringen as kind of sport. And if you don’t have the equipment, take your friend as Bock. Seen in your great video.
Mannfred, is his name really written with double „n“?
Stay healthy for the rest of your tour! >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> yes

Not suggesting any of the drivers are fatigued. I mean't your decision was too ambitious.
Hi Guy - rough estimates of approximately 90 shows, an average 5000 (I don't really know!) per show gives 450 000 people. Round it up to 500 000 then. With the exception of those very few fans that seem to moan and groan over anything and everything, giving half a million people a wonderful musical experience needs a big word of thanks. Having seen at least one MC concert everytime he has toured whether in DS, NHB or on his tod with you guys since 1981, I have to say, the experience gets better every time. Thanks for Rome this year, a great night despite the heat! Piper to the End - whooo, quite moving

Enjoy the last dates & see you soonish!

H Doc!
Just to thank you all for the great concert you gave us in Lisbon. It's always a pleasure to see you again. It's also funny to see photos of places I pass everyday on your diary.
in case you're interested, the first picture of the big statue you placed in the Lisbon entry is of a former Portuguese prime-minister: Marquis de Pombal. He was in charge during the earthquake era and was highly influenced by his diplomatic work in London and Vienna. Under that influence, he had a focused and planned intervention right after the earthquake.
He was quite pragmatic in those times: 1 - take care of the wounded and bury the dead and 2 - Rebuild the city with an intelligent plan (Lisbon's historical downtown resembles much like New York... with a very linear architecture and also by applying anti-seismic structures that are still used today)
Nowadays, the statue is a place where football fans go, whenever their club wins the league... oh well... >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> many thanks

I regret that the facilities were not best suited for a rock concert. Regarding what you say in your diary, I want to say "yes, you were in Galicia on three previous occasions. In 1992, the OES tour in a city named Vigo. In 1996, the tour of GH, in A Coruña.
Hello Doc. You mentioned you've never been in Santiago before. But you actually did! Shangri-la Promo, lil playback show, in the Obradoiro Square, the great square with the Cathedral. Can't remember the year. And you've played in green Galicia twice before: Golden Heart tour (in Coruña), and with DS in Vigo.
Also, Torres family has always spent his summer hols in Galicia. And he is married to his childhood sweetheart, from that summer hols time. -Great show, yes,we were a bit insane... maybe the heat turned us all a bit wild!. >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> Yes, of course, thanks

Well Doc, I'm so excited to read my name as the winner of the string-competition that I hardly believe it!! It's the first time in my life that something like this happens, and I really want to thank you! Of course I'm VERY glad I'll get the autographed drum-head, but I want to say that NO PRIZE in the world is better than following MK's work, and all the band's devotion to music and to fans. Your wonderful diary and forum are a daily caress to all of us. For all these reasons, (and many others) please accept and give to the rest of the band my SPECIAL thankyouuuu. >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> Cheers Alberto

After I got over the artistic majesty of your can of Pledge photo, I started wondering about Matt's "Piano". I'm assuming that it is just an empty piano shell with a keyboard inserted inside. If this is the case, why bother? Doestn't that just create extre weight to haul from gig to gig? Why not just put it on a stand like the rest? >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> I wrote about this in the last tour diary but it is a very good question. It's actually a question of aesthetics and the shell isn't all that heavy. Plus, oddly enough, the piano sounds better when it's in the shell. Trust me.

Hi Guy,
many thanks for such a wonderful words regarding your time in Lisbon. For sure you have hit on the spot on (some of) the good things about my town - not to mention the superb audience.
Unfortunately I am now in Brazil and could not attend your concert.
Do you know if that concert will be available for MP3 download?
Also, you have mentioned about filming - any live DVD is planned for Xmas release?
Cheers and have a great holiday after this tour. >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> Nothing planned I'm afraid

Nevertheless you seem well oiled on stage and that catch the fans. Honestly I must say that I had the feeling that you all seemed a little tired, of course that it's understandable and we all can live with that! Great moment with Marbletown and yes Done with Bonaparte!
Indeed I was expecting to hear for the first time live We can get Wild...Ah well maybe some other time...

Although I’m not a competition winner, it was fun to take part in the NS & string comp! Thanks.
Nice way to dig a little deeper … errrr …. a LOT deeper in the NS songs! :-)))
Any chance you will post the comp solutions, just to check how pathetic I was at it? … hehe …
Btw: now that the tour is coming to an end, with which feelings do you look back at the past four months?

We have a lot of noise from cars etc where we live. Can you give me some good advise for a good headphone that is not too heavy to wear. I've been told that Sennheiser is good?

Hello Doc, Thought I'd submit a little query while my tea is gently brewing: I guess Mark uses a compressor somewhere in his guitar signal chain - do you know what he is using? Also, (maybe one for Glenn S.) do you know whether he uses one general setting, or does it change with each song? Tea done ... All the best.
Hello,
I understand that sound and volume are checked when the hall/bullring etc is empty. So when everybody has entered, the sound changes due to a lot of people that give a different accoustic. Are the sound people checking the sound and volume again? Only on the mixing desk or have they microphones (or do they walk arround) in different places in the hall?
Thank you >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> Yes, Sven walks around the venues after the show has started and alters the PA configuration accordingly. Anyone who has seen him will notice he carries a laptop which acts as a remote for the central PA computer. More in a video I'm making at the moment. Unfortunately any videos will appear well after the tour is over so check in later
