Hi Mr. Fletcher-- "Natural Selection" is a thoroughly satisfying and uplifting piece of work, listen after listen. I have been presenting it as a model of taste and proportion to my music students who express an interest in arranging and recording. It has certainly improved my own musicianship and attitude, I think. Looking forward to welcoming you, MK, RB, and the boys back to the Britt Festival in Jacksonville, Oregon this summer (I sincerely hope). Until then, be safe, enjoy your days, and thank you so much for the many years of lasting music. Cheers, John Hollis >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> That's most kind of you to say so John.
Good Doctor - I have acquired a TC 2290 and was wondering if MK uses the 5 loops for controlling outboard gear (pedals, etc). Is there any chance of getting some info about how this bit of gear is used in MK's rack from Mr. Saggers maybe? I'm just interested in how different people use it (David Gilmour, Edge, Robben Ford etc....). I'm on a quest! >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> You are aren't you. we use it in a most basic way for delays. It's a great unit and I use it in the studio all the time, usually on Mark's electrics...anywhere from 300-500ms delays

Not sure if you remember it or not but in Leiden, Holland, November 1985, MK says something like "It's raining on me, I'm gonna get an electric shock, shows that you should never have gigs in dumps like this". I'm just wondering if you can elaborate on what was wrong with the venue? If you can remember that far back :) >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> Of course I can't remember that particular venue but for Mark to say such a thing, it must have been bad.

In other words, was the OES tour as much fun as the BIA tour? Cheers, D. >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> yes

Hi Guy,
in November 2011 I accompanied two cousins – both fans of Dylan – to the Knopfler/Dylan concert in Hamburg. It was the first time that I ever saw you, MK and the rest of the band …. It was so outstanding! Since then I bought all MK-CDs and of course „Natural Selection”. I love it so much! Thank you for the fabulous music!
Now my question: As far as I know, taking videos was forbidden in Hamburg O2Arena, but I have found some videos of your performance in Hamburg on youTube. Is it ok if I`m going to download some on my laptop?
Best wishes

Ok, Sorry i might have confused you
from the 14 Oct Bourmouth tour diary
"Laurie bought with her a new amp that has been sent to me for Richard and myself to try out, from my good friend Tom Cusimano from Yamaha in Los Angeles. Tom is also in a band called the Riders and I mixed an album for them a couple of years ago. The amp is called a THR10, a 'new' concept in amplifiers according to the blurb. No doubt Richard and I will give it a good going over and report in due course."
My question is how good do you think it is???
Look forward to your reply.
Again many thanks
Richard >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> Sorry Richard...of course. It's a great little amp. Highly recommended.

First of all, you want a gritty, rough, but moderate overdriven sound, nothing high-gain distortion stuff, i.e. turn the gain down, but master volume up. Then you want a good amount of bass and midrange and almost no treble. Finally, you set the wah somewhere between the "wah" and the "wuh" that you feel is pleasing. This should get you within the ballpark. Of course use the bridge pickup. Sounds OK to you, Doc? >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> yes

Jenn thank you so much for your candid thoughts. Music is an emotional experience and I already have very deep and emotional repsect for the USA because my roots stem from Europe mainland. USA, and many others, helped us out of a big mess here twice this past century and in 1989, helped us to reunify a divided continent. Since I got connected on the internet I have been able to experince American music and one thing is for sure, I hear many, many sounds that came originally from all over Europe. Then I hear the African American influence in the "blues" which defines the melancholy that Europen music so often tries to hide. I once asked a DJ who played for WRFX in Charlotte NC why certain UK bands were not on the play list. His answer was "we used to play a bunch of them but the listeners did not like them". Of course USA is a big continent with 300m people all well contected by the English language, but as you say regional differences plays a big part. Of all the UK performers who play American I am only comfortable with the work of MK. He alone has the insight requires the produce the music this amalgam has demanded. >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>>

@Roland:Since Guy has said MK isn't as popular in the southern states as others, I'll take his word for it. I'm from the southern states but I left in the mid-seventies. It was probably SoS that chased me out of that state as it seemed to play at every third song on the radio then. Just kidding! (btw, I was sitting in a pizza joint yesterday, owned by some young folk who 'play all the songs from way back when' when SoS came over the sound system--as I was about to leave, lol. ) Anyway, perhaps like me, you find it ironic MK isn't widely popular in the south. But I bet you know--the US south has always been a conflicted place--and stubborn. And still, it's the seat of so much musical richness in the US. In a related topic...all the talk about Bob Dylan being inarticulate reminded me of when I was a child, and so many of the old folk who spoke in a "mysterious' lanquage that was still 'familiar'.We were encouraged to listen to our old folk no matter how off their rocker they sometimes seemed. Sometimes it used to spook me and make me feel uncomfortable, and sometimes, it was kind of fun (indeed, I think they often found it fun too).I learned there was a lot to learn and things weren't always what they seemed. So...while I'm not calling Bob 'old', nor do I feel he's old, I get a kick out of the fact he sings in that "mysterious' voice--kind of keeps part of us, (pardon the pun!) forever young, and another part of us, respecting our elders and who we will be, or, are. Also kind of funny..as mk's voice has matured, often his deep baritone reminds me of my father's deep baritone (who's passed)--on some level I confuse their voices. MK, still a peer, and on the other hand--my father!--who came from the land of the blues, and, the southern states. Anyway...KIND of a shaggy dog story--(the topics are important....) Thanks all. >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>>

Hey Guy,
Wanted to say what a blast we had back in October enjoying you and the band (along with Bob) in Paris, Antwerp, and Rotterdam. Never wanting to hound or bother you guys...I did find it interesting that msn.com listed their hottest summer tours for 2012 and ya'll were included! The article stated how much attention the MK/Bob tour had gotten overseas and that it would be brought to the U.S. this summer. I have to echo the sentiment of others here that a full-blown set would be very welcomed. PS- Love the new stuff that we got to hear this past fall. Only excites us for what the future holds. The addition of Kim has to lend itself to more blues. Being a Hurricane Katrina evacuee from Mississippi (the home of the blues); nothing could please me more. Looking forward to 2012's blessings! Be safe until we see you down the road. >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> cheers

Would it be fair to say that nowadays MK's vocal comps tend to use less "scissors"? Perhaps I'm listening more than what's there but it seems that you now retain more of a single performance than before, they sound more fluid. A few years back it seemed more contrived, as like snipping more out of different passes. Does this make any sense? >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> yes, true.
Hi Guy,
Also really enjoyed chatting to Max last Wednesday. Couple more things I'd quite like to mention to him. Any chance you could put him in contact? Will understand if you don't want to publish his email address on here but if he's happy to then my email address is elliotthodges@ntlworld.com
Hopefully he'd remember me from Wednesday.
cheers >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> sure, try his facebook. You can chat with him again on March 7th as he'll be supporting BluesClub at the Half Moon in Putney!

Hi Guy,
When can we expect Page 6 of the MK Studio recording diary?
It's bad enough having such a long wait for Marks album to come
out. Your Diaries usually help us to make it through the long
wait.
I feel like a young child waiting for santa claus to arrive!
Over excited and impatient......Has Mark put a gagging order on you?
lol.
Regards
Andrew >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> Quite soon Andrew. we have a string session in a few weeks as well as a few guest vocal sessions so I'll be taking some pics and when I do, I'll do the diary

Marks and Spencer market an "extra strong tea" which suits my taste. A company has started to sell a product called "Builders Tea" in a yellow box which is not very good, in my view. On another subject...Can someone please advise me if Bob Dylan is popular in the Southern States of the USA? Does he sell tickets as well as, say in, the North and Mid West of the USA? Moving on, I can see a workable schedule on a shared tour of MK/BD with MK having a 6 day week whilst looping in and out of Bob's three/4 day week. That would work well, and keep the management on their toes. You would have the two tours running within the same time frame. >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>>

Fletch,
I bought my first PG tips decaf today. Regular black tea type. What type do you drink and how do you prepare it. I hear so much about it from you. I wanted to drink it at night, relaxing while listening to my Night Ranger lps.....
your humble fan,
Mark >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> For individual cups - First, brew the kettle and place one teabag per cup. when the kettle boils, LEAVE FOR 15 SECS. then pour into each cup/mug. do not leave to sit, that's the cause of tea-pond-scum. stir every 15 seconds or so. after a minute, remove the bag and add milk to taste. Simple. Make sure you do not use Liptons teabags. PG, Tetley, Yorkhire, Barry's all fine, just not Liptons.

not gonna comment on the BD or not not to BD question, coz i do not care, i loved the past tour and i would enjoy it again, as much as i would like to see you guys tour on your own. What DOES bother/interest me ia the tour recording thingy you did on the GL tour but, i guess for obvious reasons, did not/ were not able to do on the last outing. If the tour will be joining BD, do know that there's a lot of stateside fan tapers out there, that will catch most of your shows, and,..getting to my actual question: if you tour on your own, can you consider doing some live recording solution again?
for the average fans to buy the show they went to and to the freaks, get-a-lifers like many of us on this forum, to buy as many as our chubby little hands can grab! >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> The fact that we have recordings of every show since 2005 hasn't been forgotten by management

MK never goes backwards..that was the last tour with Bob Dylan.
The tribute Restless Farewell is of stunning beauty! I can't help thinking you've reached a new level of refined recording with it. The instruments remain subtly in the back of the mix in comparison with e.g. Secondary Waltz. A very quiet and slowed down singing as well as a gentle flow make this song an absolute masterpiece. Obviously Mark wanted to do Bob's song justice, but would you agree that it also gives testimony to your many years of trying to even more refine your recording abilities? >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> Yes, we like it.

I should have identified the issue as effecting the Blues Club Band and not the big venues that MK does. Your band plays in some small country pubs and it is these locations where my query was focussed. I did a little research on your speakers because of the substantial aluminium heat dissapators...some call these "heat sinks"... evident on the sides of the boxes. I maintain that your speakers require 500 watts of power each. So running both at once uses about 9 Amps of electricity. With all the other kit from 6 musicians the ampage soon adds up and the result would be some very hot and smelly electrical fittings...the smell is akin to FISH rotting..no joke. >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> mmm, not sure you quite understand amplification and current loading..We've never had a problem in the UK. Musical equipment does not draw much current at all, even the PA.....The Heat sinks on the KRK's are quite normal for power amplifiers and are in no way extreme. Amps get warm but not as hot as digital converters, older analog synths or some (PC) computer components. You are quite wrong re. the KRK's requirements. They are a mere 160 watts max output,. Where'd you get 500? BESIDES, these are STUDIO monitors... nothing to do with a PA.

Guy, wil there be a tour to support the new album??? And i mean a tour with only MK and his band because i'm reading a lot of rumors on the web about MK going on tour with BD again..... Hoping we can leave it with that..... just rumors....... Don't get me wrong here but i've seen it, it was good, had a wonderful time but i do not see the point of them going on tour again..... But he, like i said just rumors....
and if MK wants to do this one more time than who am i.....
But i am hoping for a tour like you always do after a new album, so wil there be one in 2012/2013?? >>> Dr Fletch answers: >>> There will be plenty of live dates, be assured of that.
