saxual healing

Hi Doc, Really love the MK and GF songs. In fact, listening to nothing else!! Better sell all of my other CD's!!! What do you think? Also love the sound of a saxophone, so here is my question Doc: Is there any chance of hearing the sound of a sax in the next album? Or is it to early for that?

Well it is a little early for that but you never know..as for selling your cd's, depends on what they are.

q's

Dear Doc, I've got a few questions for you. Can you please answer?
1. I was not able to get to the Newcastle Tribute of MK (was shortly before giving birth to our first baby), but I've listened to the kind speeches there. What would you mention in a speech about MK? How would you describe him as a human being as we fans 'know' him only from shows or a quick chat?
2. The sound on the 'Real Live Road Running' DVD is fab, but the camera work is sometimes a bit strange IMHO: a lot of shots from behind the stage, MKs solos are not well captured and Guys keyboard work is not really visible as we fans can usually only see Guys beautiful shirts on stage and not his playing. Would have been a possibility to show a bit more of it, don't you think? Anyway when running the selection menu of the DVD I can hear talking/voices. What is it? Crew? M&G?
3. You've told us that MK and Guy are working on MKs next album. And that you want to ensure that the songs are ready for the next stage, the band. In what kind of stage are the songs when MK and Guy meet? Are they ready to play (vocals + guitar) and you only think about how to include other instruments (arrangements) or is there only a melody ready or an idea? Can you describe this a bit? Thanks a lot and a happy and save 2007!

Congratulations on the birth.
1. I have a few things in mind but I'd rather save what I have to say about Mark for a more appropriate time.
2. The dvd was shot on a small budget and with little or no preparation. what you see is pretty much what there is. It's the voices of the meet and greet on the menu.
3. When we get together initially, the songs are in Mark's head, so he plays them to me and we take it from there.

tones

Hi Doc It's good to know MK and you are working on new stuff:))) Hope it's gonna rescue a bit of those beautiful Strat tones Mark used to deliver. I love what Mark does with his Les Paul, but I reckon all his fans, as well as I do, miss that clean and characteristic sonority. Does any of the new songs you've been introduced to sound like What It Is or stuff like that?

All I can say right now is that you will enjoy quite a variety of lovely tones on the new record. Including the Strats, Les Pauls, Gretch, Silvertone..yum.

speakers?
Happy New Year. Just to say I had the DVD of the concert for Christmas and it is just simply brilliant – I can’t stop watching it. The mix is excellent and truly gives each song the ‘space’ that it deserves. Just a quick couple of questions: 1) What speakers does MK use in his cab? 2) What song(s) was the Tone King(?) used on?

Thanks, Now, I'm gonna guess here...Speakers - Celestions. tone King....I honestly can't recall. If I think of it, I'll update this post.

lay it down

hi doc, on your newsboard u told us that danny and glenn are laying down their instruments….what does that mean? are they stop playing in mk´s band? no studiorecording-apperience, no touring at all? a happy new year! They're recording throughout January.

Chad

Greetings, Herr Doktor! I hope this finds you well. I admit I'm asking this late, but I noted that Chad Cromwell had to drop out of the 2005 tour. Is he OK? Loved his work on "Night in London", and loved Danny Cummins' on the 2005/6 tours as well. Best

Chad is apparently absolutely fine. Although we've had little contact recently.

look in

Hello mr. ! I'd like to know if there's something you miss from DS tours, compared to things now? How was it to play in huge stadiums etc... am I right, thinking, Mark doesn't like that so much?? Also, why haven't you played On Every Street songs at all in the last tours... I consider On Every Street one of the best songs from MK, Planet of New Orleans also deserves a mention.

There's not much I miss from the stadium days in terms of a musical experience. As you know, Mark tends to look forwards and those songs don't get much of a look in now.

Studer time
you mentioned in "ask fletch" that you and mark are recording some things as you work on the new album. I'm guessin then to add the rest of band ( or musicians at a leter date? ). anyway curious as to the recording you are doin now is going to tape, or are you doing it digital through nuendo, or other software with what you are recording now....

We have recorded one or to 'extra-curricular' tunes but our minds are fully on the album. We are using Nuendo at 96k and will probably clean the old tape heads on the Studer in January for drums and bass.

getting out
I’m curious Dr., if Guy Fletcher and Mark Knopfler ever get out together to see some current musical talent. I know that they make their own music whether it bucks the trends or not, but are they ever curious about what the kids are listening to? Are there ever any ideas or style elements they see or hear that makes them say, “Hey, that’s interesting.” Are they tempted to try to work with any of them? (…sort of Aztec Camera style…) Thankfully we both have teenage sons who keep us informed of what's going on in the real world. Occasionally I'll go and see a local band and I listen to tons of music, albeit mp3's (aarrgh!)

it ain't gonna happen
Hi All - STOP all the talk for Dire Straits reunion, it aint gonna happen !!! Enjoy MK/GF versions of DS material, it suberp and absolutely fantastic, just listen to So Far Away on the Real Live DVD, it is fit for 85.000 people at a stadium concert, but is played for 8-10.000 people in a small place, this is a moment in heaven and, lean back and enjoy it! All is already said for other songs, but were is Fade To Black, is it
forgotten ? I have been to several Knopfler concerts and i feel blessed to see and feel the intensity from stage, thank you ! How do you guys feel playing to crowds who "craves" for more more more....... Anyhow and above all, just wants to say thanks and let you know that we are sone "users" of Knopfler songs out there.

 cheers

snare
Dear Doctor Fletch Firstly, Merry Christmas to you and the band.. Good work on the DVD. I was unable to see the tour this time and realised what I had missed. One qustion for you which has buuged me since purchasing said DVD and accopmanied CD...On This is us on the CD there is what sounds like a snare drum rattling every 15 seconds or so. I can't hear this on the DVD as clearly but wanted to know a) Is it a rattling snare drum or b) Is it an intentional sound coming from a synth or other pre arranged sound. On another note, are you aware if MK has been approached for the Princess Diana Gig next July. Kind regards and keep up the good work

That's the sound the snare drum makes when you play that 'rolling' pattern. Cool eh?

Yes, Mark has been asked but there will be no DS reunion I'm afraid.

the process
You see, now I'm just curious. I do read your Doc Fletch page quite often. It's an awesome source of reliable info on what's going on around the albums and music around MK. Usually I'm quite happy just reading the answers to the questions asked, but now I do have a little one myself: You've mentioned several times that you and Mark are working on the new album and that progress is going good. You mentioned also that you've been using the National Steel a lot. You probably get a LOT of questions on how the song writing process works, but here come another one: How much do you and Mark actually do? I was always under the impression that you two would meet, he'd play some song ideas he has and you kind of develop that to get some basic songs to work with. I thought that you then would go and meet the other guys and finish the songs. But it seems as if you go into quite some detail on the songs. So, do you and Mark basically finish the songs and then meet up with the other guys to have them "just" add their 'spice'? Boring eh? I'm just curious. Another question: Would never ask WHERE you guys live, but how far apart? Is it a long drive to meet and work on the album? Who's studio are you working in, yours or Mark's? Enough now, looking forward to the new album. You guys have been doing a GREAT job since 96! Oh, by the way, I've pretty much got the entire PhD group of the Stockholm University astronomy department lined up for your next gig here - don't let me down, I promised them you'd come ;)

Mark and I often spend the first few weeks of a new project exploring the new songs and ensuring they're ready for the next stage, the band. In this instance though, we're doing a bit more than exploring. We're recording as we go although there will be other musicians involved very soon. We are working at British Grove, I think that's no secret, Mark's wonderful new studio.

accordion joke
Dear Doc, Reliable sources have confirmed that MK (Mark Knopfler, that is) in addition to the new record he is working on with Mr. Fletcher, which by and large is a side project, is compiling an instrumental collection of all his songs from the Dire Straits era which will be re-recorded with pan pipe and accordion being the dominant instruments. What is a little unclear is, and this is my question: Is it true that synth drums and strings comprise the additional instrumentation? And: Will the 4 CD set be ready before Christmas 2007? I, for one, wish we were in December next year! Happy Holidays, Doc. Doing a good job.

missing tunes
Hi, Doc. First, let me say I saw the "Roadrunning" show in Toronto and was blown away by the musicianship and the show in general - just superb. There were (in my opinion) live versions of several songs in Toronto that were unmatched on previous recorded versions and even the official DVD - a show I will always remember - and the "Why Worry" finale, despite Mark's problems with his earpiece and the resultant shared mic with Emmylou, was the icing on the cake - almost the way it should have been by design. When I heard a DVD was in the works, I counted the days and have not been disappointed with the result - replicates my Toronto experience for the most part - something I can replay at my pleasure. Good job. My only disappointment is that the live CD has not been included in Canada- just the DVD. Do you know why the Canadian packaging is different from the US and the UK??? Also, there are a number of MK and DS songs that, altho' released in the UK, never have made a Canadian release. Any thinking on a "complete" retrospective of MK recordings? My buddies in the UK (MK and DS fans like myself) continually bug me about the missing parts in my collection............ Thanks, and eagerly awaiting whatever you guys do next.

On the face of it it does seem odd that track listings and releases are often different in the various territories. Upon consultation of the management, I've discovered that the reasoning varies and it's not always a straightforward answer. Sometimes the licensees decide (labels) and sometimes these are management decisions often based on promotional issues, market reactions and competition.

4 q's
Hello Doc, First, I would like to tell how beautiful the new DVD is. The overall quality is trully awesome. My only regret is "this is us" which is I think really not the best performance ever made by MK.
1-I just read the "shaker blues" entry in your diary (very funny). I can't even imagine the 96'ers and MK releasing a record with a track that goes out of time (even if I must say that, as an amateur musician, I did'nt notice it till I read this ! lol). I guess you all noticed it when you recorder the song so why did you choose to keep the tracks that way ? Did you prefer to keep the one-take feeling of a slightly out of time track ? Are you aware of any other similar thing in MK records ? (well, just say yes or no ;))
2- We are all very excited to get some news concerning the new MK record. Do you think it will be more "electric" or "acoustic" ? More "guitaristic" or more "lyristic" ?
3- Pedal steel guitar planed ? Perhaps will we hear again that old Pensa MK1 ? (or any other pensa ?)
4- Duets planned (with Mr clapton or Mr Gilmour for example) ?
Thanks Doc for answering our fan questions !

1. Whatever is the most natural. There's plenty of non-perfect stuff on all of Mark's records. We're not really into quantization.
2. So are we. It's coming along very nicely thank-you.
3. No pedal but we seem to be using a lot of the National steel.
4. nope

lights
Hi Doc,First of all congratulations with the new DVD. I love to listen this show with my amp. showing the DTS signal. One thing I wondered: Has the lightning plan being adjusted for the show because of the cameras? The lightning didn't fully come to its right on the DVD. Like on Speedway to Nazareth. The lightning during that number was amazing. Also on Why Worry the lightning was very beautiful. I didn’t see that on DVD however. Many thanks for this beautiful DVD. I can't wait for the next show.

Yes, I think it was adjusted to accommodate the filming.

guitar world
Hi. Dr Fletch. I've just posted this on the MK Forum. But was also wondering if you could shed any light on it for me. Having access to all these bootlegs recently, from recent tours, and tours gone by, has got me thinking. My questions are as follows.?
1. Is there a guitar that Mark has used since the late 70's, which he is still using now for live gigs or studio work.? I realise that the MK Sig Strat is pretty recent so obviously not that one. Eg. The national steel. Because he used that on 1st DS album. How many of these has he had since then, and is he still using the very 1st one. (Last year i was in the National steel shop down Denmark St in London with a mate who was thinking of buying one, and the owner told a great story about how this struggling student bought one in the 70's, and how that person happened to be Mark Knopfler. It happened that we were in London to see MK at the RAH.) Don't know if this was a true story or not.?
2. What does Mark do with all of his current guitars as far as storage.?
3. How many does he own.?
4. How many has he owned.?
5. Does he buy them himself.?
6. What does he do with ones he no longer needs (from 30 years ago)? Are they all in a vault somewhere.?
Some of them must hold a lot of sentimental value.
I'm pretty sure EC auctions a lot of his for his Crossroads project.
7. I think Dave Gilmour and Chris Rea are examples of guitarists that have fave guitars that have stuck with them over the years. I remember seeing CR in the 80's, and the guitar he was using looked well worn, as is DG's one from the back cover of his About Face album.
8. Has Mark got a favourite.? (Mine has to be the Red & White Fender Strat from Early DS period)

I'll do my best.
1. The National is the only one which springs to mind and we find ourselves using it more and more recently.
2. They are well looked after by Glenn Saggers
3. Lots
4. More than lots
5. Yep although some were gifts from mates
6. He has been known to give guitars away for charities and auctions.
7. indeed
8. I would guess the 59 Les Paul

just right
Hi Guy I just wanted to say thanks for the great job you did on the DVD. I’ve had it here in Melbourne for just over a week now and I can’t stop listening. It’s one of the best sounding DVD’s I have, I think you got the surround mix spot on! The mix should sound as if you are in the audience and not in the band. You got it just right!

cheers

supreme trivia
Hi Guy, Sorry if you've already been asked this question, but I can't find any answer on your site.
What is the reason why Mark decided to use a mediator for "So far away" and "Our Shangri-La" during the last tour with Emmy ? The songs do not sound exactly the same, this is very noticable, and I guess that was made on purpose, but do you know why Mark wanted them this way ? And does he plan to play more songs with a mediator now ? In my humble opinion, I prefer when Mark plays with his fingers, even if "So far away" and "Our Shangri-la" sound very good on the DVD... The sound is a bit clearer with a mediator, we could say... Still working on Mark's new album ? Thank you !

I had to read this a few times before I relized you mean a PICK! or PLECTRUM.

The size of those strings on that 54 Strat...I guess you've gotta use a pick.

quality shoe
Love the DVD-- One trivial question – Every time I watch ‘Sonny Liston’ – I always remark to my wife that I like MK’s shoes! Any idea what he’s wearing? Wow, that is trivial...I think they're Timberlands

he shoots, he scores
Hi doc, Many thanks in advance for satisfying my curiosity:
a) for a song, who decides the balance between the different instruments and voices on stage? Guy? Mark?
Is the balance from the studio/CD used as a reference? Is Chuck consulted?
b) the "This is us" piano outro played by Matt on the DVD is really nice . Congratulations to the author. ( Guy ? Jim? Matt?)
c) When a new keyboard player as Matt joins the band , how does he learn the scores that he plays on songs as Romeo and Juliet , Telegraph Road or any other? do reference scores exist?( written by Alan, Jim or yourself)

a) What you hear in the arena at a show is mixed by the FOH (front of house) engineer, in our case, Robert Collins. It bears no relation to thestudio/CD's. The mix we hear on stage is balanced by Kerry, our monitor engineer.

b)Author?? It's simply Matt's interpretation of what Jim played on the record.

c)scores?? nothing of this kind exists. All new band members learn the respective songs and parts. By ear.

shaker blues
hi doc i love the song 'hill farmers blues' on rpd , however the egg shaker goes out of time for a moment at 0:40. who is shaking it? i take it's not programmed! thanks that ain't no shaker and it's the guitars that go out of time. Cool isn't it?

some questions if I may : 1. Do the musicians stay in touch in between touring ? eg Do you mail or see each other sometimes ? I can image that this is not easy, being in American and British contingencies. Still : if you spend some months together day in day out, not seeing the other band members for a year or so seems a long time.
2. About the concert : does my memory serve me well : does Matt play a piano that isn't a digital one, but a keyboard / synth is a piano casing ? If so, wich keyboard ?
and to finish this consult, doc :
3. In the preshow meet and greet Richard plays lap steel. In Shangri-la you use some steel guitar samples on one your instruments (also shown in the DVD). Did you alternatively consider that Richard would play those steel guitar fragments on his lap steel or is he needed for playing the basic electric guitar line in that song ?

1. We stay in touch via e-mail but don't really get together unless we're working.

2. The piano we use onstage is a Yamaha Motif8, encased in a piano shell. The reason for this is simply that keeping a real piano in tune on tour is virtually impossible due to the temperature changes and constant travel etc.

3. I play the steel parts, on a synth, not samples, simply because I have a hand free and Richard doesn't. I think it's nice that they're there.

Kerry's ears
Hello Dr. Fletch.. First of all I would like to thank you all for a brilliant addition to the dvd collection...comments on the mix from the more technically astute dont interest me! it sounds great on our dvd Guy and thats "All that matters" (theres a song in there somewhere!)
But I do have a boring techhy question for you which has bothered me since the "ON THE NIGHT" dvd...On certain songs MK sometimes seems to look stage right and make a gesture as if to say "TURN IT UP"... Is Glenn there waiting on tenterhooks for a nod to crank it up!..or am I imagining things?...cheers Doc..keep sharing things with us...we really do appreciate it...
Yes, Mark looks stage right at Kerry the monitor man, usually to change something in his monitor mix (in-ears).

Flaxwood
Hi Doc, Does Mark and /or Guy have a Flaxwood and play it? What is their opinion?

As a matter of fact, Guy does have one and likes it.

onward and upward
Just reading the latest questions on your website. The ever present Dire Straits reunion question always amazes me. After the last 5 albums or so I can't believe anyone would even think about that. I'd have to say you guys are doing the best stuff of your careers. No reason to go back. Onward I say!

thank you

tutorials
Hi Doc, Hope you can help. I'm a middle aged guitarist with young children so have no time to play in bands anymore. Over the last couple of years I have bought Dire Straits Tutorials with Backing Tracks. I now have about 10 DS backing tracks which is great, but I've been playing this stuff years so would like to play along to some MK's solo material. Does MK have any projects in the pipeline that would allow for this or allow for example a company like Total Accuracy to release some MK backing tracks. I had no idea that this stuff existed so I'm really not in a position to say if the solo stuff would be out there. Projects which are in the pipeline would certainly not be candidates for tutorial dvd's.

belated complaint

Hi, First I want to thank you and everyone involved for a great show in LA and live DVD with Real live roadrunning. Something to treasure there! I would like to know why Mark has never played Tunnel Of Love at his solo gigs? Is it because it reminds him of a previous relationship and upsets him? Or is it because it is a physically demanding song vocally and on Marks breathing due to it's tempo? Or maybe it requires too much extra equipment and seems a lot for one song? That extended mega solo at the end which he played during the 85-86 tour was absolutely out of this world and it would be a crime for that to not be captured on a live DVD or album. I know there is a similar version on Alchemy but it doesn't compare to the '85 version. Also, I want to also complain that you didn't play Tunnel Of Love during the On Every Street tour. I was so disappointed that I didn't get to hear that when I saw you in Manchester in '92. Why was Telegraph and Sultans omitted from the On The Night album, you could have made it a double album!!!

We stopped playing that years ago simply because Mark was tired of it. Who knows, maybe it will be revived, I really can't say.

camera-shy

Hello Doc, The DVD was only issued today in France but it was worth waiting . We spent a really great moment tonight with son, remembering the last June (very hot) show in le Zenith in Paris. The sound is really fantastic, the images are subtly mixed but we were just a bit disappointed by the fact that the band seems to have less fun and less complicity than usual: were you just more concentrated because of video cameras ?

It's no secret the band was aware of various cameramen running around doing their level best not to get in the way but it WAS the best band performance of the tour..and I can prove it!

Re-think your system
Dear Guy Many thanks for the response! Please do not think that I am some kind of Audio Nut or a Rich Bastard (Which I certainly am not!), but what I do appreciate is good sound quality!! It is very frustrating nowadays to find that most ‘Commercial Recordings’ if I can be so bold to use these words, all sound appalling! With the ATC Speaker System I use at home anything less than an ‘A1’ Recording sounds absolutely crap! Take for instance Miss E L Harris recording of ‘Red Dirt Girl’ superb album lyrically, but sound quality wise not so good! On the other hand if you take a listen to any of the Marc Cohn Albums or a Counting Crows Record, they sound great! Mark from his early days with ‘Dire Straits’ has always recorded a ‘Good Sounding Record’ both musically and sonically, take for example ‘Love Over Gold’, still now the title track from that Album even played back through the ATC’s is superb! On listening to your new Live DVD last night (My wife and 3 year old were out visiting the ‘Mother-in-Law’) you have to listen again to ‘Song for Sonny Listen’ LOUD only on a good system do you really appreciate the amount of time an Engineer takes on getting the sound right! My personal opinion is that on most modern recordings the engineer is under obligation by the record company to produce a certain sound that suits the masses, I.e. people with a £ 99 ghetto blaster from some ‘High Street’ Electrical Chain. That sound is generally over produced to wring the last amount of false bass from ‘On Board’ Loudspeakers that are not up to the job in hand and produce lots of distortion. It is a shame as ‘Good Sound’ is available from ‘Specialist Stores’ for not a lot of money! Any way, as I have said before your boss should be proud of what you have produced! Well done and keep it up!!!!

I think we've touched on this before. There are a lot of records out there which do sound, for want of a better word, crap... but contrary to Bob Dylan's recent comments, there is good stuff out there too.

But I get the impression it goes unnoticed most of the time because the music buying public seem to be listening on poorer and poorer equipment. It drives me mad when I hear my son Max, bless him, listening to QOTSA on his Mac laptop speakers. Mp3's have a lot to answer for, even though I admit to using them for 90% of my music playback. I'm thankful that vinyl isn't dead and that turntable sales are on the up. There's simply nothing like listening to a well produced/mastered album on vinyl or CD through a decent sound system and I recommend it to anyone.

trouser stuffing

Dear Dr. Fletch, How does MK feel about his former Genesis band mates reuniting for a tour? Is he miffed that he wasn’t invited to take part? Like most British pop stars, Mark was married to Patsy Kensit at one time. How are things between them these days? I heard that they had a huge legal battle over custody of a dog; I only hope the damn thing died and they can be friends now. As an Afro-American, has MK ever experienced any racism within the music community? Lastly, it has come to my attention that Welshmen seem to take great amusement from putting ferrets down their trousers, yet Englishmen do not (to such an extent). Do you thing this is because Welsh men have more room in their trousers, in general, than Englishers?

Yeah, when Phil left the Straits we were all gutted. Patsy did the rounds and moved on. It was the hamster that caused the cerfuffle and is now living in luxury in Florida, the rat.

I did speak to Terry Williams recently, now happily remarried and living in his homeland Wales, he took offence when I mentioned trouser stuffing.
22/11/06
the real concert
Hi Doc, Great DVD: congrats and thanks! Some questions about it: Why did you reorder the songs in a different way from the "real" concert? " All That Matters" on the companion CD is taken from which concert (it doesn't appear you played it at the Gibson theater and nothing about it in the booklet)? What pitch do you use to tune-up (A=440hz)? We didn't re-sequence the songs, it is the 'real' concert. It's just that Michelangelo is missing at Emmylou's request. All that matters was recorded in Washington at the Constitution hall on 21st June 2006.
22/11/06
final say
Hi, did you have to play your 'final mixed version' of the DVD/CD to MK (or Emmy) to get an OK from him? Or did he just trust your abilty?  of course, they're not daft.
22/11/06
missing stand
Hello Guy, Thirst my compliments for the DVD. I do have a question about. During So Far Away Stuart did backing vocals on some european gigs. During the DVD show i can not see of he is doing the backing vocals Is Stuart doing backing vocals during the DVD show ?

I'm glad you brought this to my attention. Amazingly, the reason Stuart didn't get to sing on So Far Away was simply Adrian forgot to set his mic stand up at the beginning of the song! A very rare mistake.

tips on recording

1. are all effects, excepting maybe the guitar amp distortions added after initial recording, or is some added in the course of recording. Mainly wanting to know if a certain amount of eq, or compression is used in the initial takes. mostly relating to the mk albums from ragpickers till road running, and your own recordings such as myspace clips. If so is compression or limiting used, and apprx ratios. I am guessing it is then also compressed more during mixdown?

2. I am getting ready to perhaps record some more songs basically at home, small apt. probably use a good mic and pre, audio interface with computer, and software. I realize that most of what i will use will not be of the cost of upper level high end studios, but probably more on the line i would guess of prosumer/pro. the recordings will most probably be just vocal and guitar, maybe some minor dubs just to enhance a mood or effect etc, but not necessarily big solo overdubs. I would greatly appreciate your input if you can reply at your convenience, as to what steps i may take to get the strongest / or closest sound to a professional recording.
Basically outside of not overriding the input on recording, some good basics on the initial recording, and when mixing down. As in above compress, eq, before recording, or save all for mixdown? One mic or two on guitar ( acc)? type of room to record guitar in? separation of vocal and guitar technique if recording all at once? Anything you may be of help or simply maybe rule of thumb in pro recordings. thanks for your time as always, sincerely,
p.s. great job on dvd etc.

1. For the live dvd, 90% of the eq/compression was applied during the mixing stage. As for general studio recording, I tend to record flat but that is only a testament to an instrument sounding great. Vocals will always need a bit of compression, as will bass, some guitars. Trust your ears is the rule.

2. The rule of thumb here is simple, use the BEST istruments/mics/compressors/CABLES/mixer you can lay your hands on and use as direct a path to the recorder as physically possible. It WILL make a difference. Also, use the highest sampling rate you can. 96k is great.

If it sounds good - it is good.

line-up
Hi Dr Fletch regarding the new MK record, are you going to keep the same line-up as per previous records / tours or are you proposing something different? such as new players with new styles and new instruments (like saxophone), etc.? Will you co-produce the record?

It's still fairly early to say but the line-up on the album will be slightly different, with different instruments possibly and yes, I am co-producing.

ATC Rule
Dear Guy I have just brought the new MK EH Live DVD, and reading through some of the questions posed by other fans regarding the sound/mixing etc of the DVD has prompted me to e-mail you with my views! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I have to say that the people writing into you regarding the lack of rear surround information etc have completely missed the point! What you and your colleagues in the recording studio have achieved is as true to the being there experience as I have heard (And believe me I have heard them all, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac Live DVD’s the lot!). When you attend a Live Concert be it Rock, Classical or whatever the band and the sound that they produce is coming directly from the stage and surrounding arrears (Speaker racks next to or above the stage), reverberated sound generated from the acoustics of the building will deflect the various instruments and the audience itself around you adding ambience and the feeling of being there to a person standing in the venue, I believe that you have captured this on the production of the DVD very accurately! I do not know what studio gear you used when mixing the DVD, but my system at home consists of a 5.1 Active Speaker System by a little know British Loudspeaker Manufacturer called ATC Loudspeaker Technology based in Stroud, this along with a high quality 5.1 Processor and DVD Player has allowed me to enjoy the wonderful sound quality of this DVD to its fullest extent! Any way I hope that this e-mail is of help and please keep up the good work. Kindest Regards

I like mails like yours!
You understand the methods I've employed here exactly and I thank you for your comments. Interestingly, at British Grove studios, the large loudspeakers we use in both control rooms (and they ARE large) are made by the very same ATC from Stroud. They are without any shadow of doubt the best large studio monitors EVER made. In fact, we use them all day, every day, sometimes at extremely low levels and their clarity and definition is second to none. We are spoilt but that's a good thing isn't it!
best

pics

Hi Guy, question for the Doc; You did say you would be posting news and maybe photos on the recording of the new album at Mark's new studio. Is this something you are working on? Any news on who else is playing or is it just you two at the moment? Is Mark using his new Martin acoustic on any song? I have seen it on the website and it looks fabulous.

At the moment it's just Mark and myself and consequently, the sessions aren't exactly loaded with photo opportunities. I will get round to posting something soon though.

real live

Hi Doc, I just got the DVD Realliferoadrunning and watched it in DTS. I noticed that the Surround channels dont really produce any musical info, mainly only the chears from the audience. Why didnt you do a full DTS 5.1 track like the Eagles DVD"s? On their DVD's the surround channels are fully used.
Dont get me wrong, its a superb dvd and the sound is very good (esspecially the vocals) but since its a DTS DVD i hoped for a more wide and true surround mix. Why did you mix it this way?

It's mixed in a way that was true to the sound coming from the stage that night. No overdubs, no surround tricks, no bull. There's plenty of reverbs and ambience in the surrounds....in my opinion.

sound
Hi Guy Just wanted to let you know that you did a great great great job with the sound of the cd and dvd!!!!!!!!! It's really amazing. It brings back the precious moments of the concert at Dublin and Zurich.
When I listen to the musical arrangements of Shangri-La I've got goosebumps all over....

thanks

dvd feedback
Great Sound! But where's the audience, for heavens sake???? Playing against a 'black wall' isn't raising the 'Live-Vibe'... The Film director is somewhat polarizing in my view. Filming from the back of the stage to the front is nice, but the most important part on that is that you see the audience! Otherwise it's useless, isn't it? Also - why didn't anyone film Richard coming in with his Gibson on the outro of Speedway? Concerning Mixing: Well done! But you should have been more egoistic in mixing the Speedway outro, because I very much miss your Synth Pads on the beginning of the outro. But overall, the CD is outstanding. Too bad 'I dug up a Diamond' is missing! Why is 'Michaelangelo' missing? Too much EH stuff then? Or offvcial CopyRights problem?

As was revealed in the q&a at the screening, the whole thing was very much shot on-the-fly with little or no camera rehearsal. What you see is what you get. There was no audience lighting so the show was just as any other except that the band played their respective arses off. A CD is shorter than a DVD so there are omissions. Michelangelo is 'missing' at Emmylou's request. I thought I exercised admirable restraint re. the keyboard levels.

TC
Hi Guy, I need some serious help. I can handle finding nice distortion sounds, but for the life of me I can't find nice clean effects that don't compress the crap out of my guitar signal. What does mark use for the nice tremolo and delay effects he plays? Pedal Brands etc???? Can you help me? Thanks Doc. Pedals will generally affect your sound. If you're going to add a delay, The delays we use in the studio are usually something like a TC Electronics 2290. They are very clean. Compression...any decent outboard compressor will work but we use Neve, Urei 1176, Broadhurst Gardens, Joe Meeks, LA2A and Fairchild. Everything else comes from the amp including tremolo.

Michelangelo
Hi Guy, Maybe this question shouldn't be asked to you but since you've been involved in the production of the latest DVD maybe you know the reason why Emmylou's beautiful song - 'Michelangelo' was dropped from the tracklist? Are there any copyright things being an issue or maybe you were not satisfied enough with the quality of the recording? I'm sure I am not the only person who is curious about that. Thank you very much for your help!

For whatever reason, Emmylou simply requested that we leave that song off the dvd. It did sound beautiful.

over?
OK Dr Fletch.............. A question that has been asked time and time again................
After hearing the announcement of "GENESIS" reforming again after a 15 year break. Could one ask the Doctor about a Dire Straits tour? NO ALBUM and just the tour like what Genesis are doing, and not for the money. Surely John and Alan, and you would be interested. What is the situation with band members, is it OVER or, is it a case of "Never say Never". It is us that bought the records and went to the gigs...............
Is it fair to say Mark at this stage should at least say whether it is over.............or not Yes, you can wake up now, sorry to bore you Please place this one Guy in your web...........it may stop other asking you the same question. Especially as the last time Genesis were touring, so was Dire Straits...........

The situation is this. As far as Mark is concerned, it IS over. He has absolutely no desire to re-from the band and tour the world in the same manner as Genesis, the Eagles, the Stones etc. etc. I know there are many many fans who would love for it to happen but right now we are enjoying making music more than ever. Having said that, you never knows what may happen in the future.
