page 2 and a half - The Big Top Arena, Carnival City, East Rand, Johannesburg - March 1st

Beneath its dramatic skyline of towering marquees and laser shows, a wave of merry pandemonium besieges you from every corner of this giant wonderland. Slots and tables as far as the eye can see, specialist restaurants, theme bars, shows, shops, cinemas. There's something for eveyone - you just decide who you want to be, a city where you'll walk in one person and leave quite another.

Here's a shot of this strange venue in the daytime. In the car with Mark and Paul on the way to soundcheck for the second show.

Matt and Chad pose outside the delightfully garish carnival city casino complex. there are 1750 slot machines in that building. Apparently this place will meet every gambler's desire.
The room in which we played was not the easiest in terms of sound but Robert Collins, our out front sound man made it seem like child's play. We DID however have to turn our ears* up to compensate!

Just like the first show, the crowd was wonderfully warm and very appreciative.
One thing we were all very aware of, was the fact that past history has taught us that the second show of a tour can be a humbling experience due to the fact that adrenaline flows thick and fast for the first show. This inevitably draws you into a false sense of security for the second. 'Stuff' just happens and catches you unawares. Maybe it's because we were all aware of this and we therefore concentrated that little bit harder that we came through this one pretty much unscathed. Maybe show number 3 will catch us out.

Somehow with this band, I don't think so.

* I will in these diaries be referring to our in-ear monitors as ears. you know, those little things which we shove in our ears.

Not quite sure what's happening here, looks like Glenn copping a feel, and only 2 shows into the tour!
