Lea Ridinger
NYC

24th July 2008

Dear Guy, As a life long New Yorker, I was anxious to read your diary entry about the Central Pk. show(unfortunately we couldn't attend) especially given our recent unstable weather. As my husband & I watched the light show last nite with the heavens opening, we thought the show would have ended early. Thank goodness, you beat the clock! As an aside, when I read in your diary that some of the band were fortunate enough to catch the Cubs v Reds game in Chicago, my first thought was that you were all at "that" game. As I scrolled down further, I saw that you actually captured that frightening event moments before the critical injury to Dominic D'Angi - who continues to recover & has an excellent prognosis. Upon seeing the photograph, my husband Tom, a photo editor for 30 years, was stuck by how well it captured an ordinary moment at the brink of an extraordinary event. Because of that & with respect to the D'Angi family, he believes that like all remarkable photos, it is a important document that should be preserved for research. Perhaps over the course of time, you would consider contributing it to the photo archives of the Chicago Public Library. All the best for the last leg of the tour. Sincerely, Lea Ridinger Sure thing Lea, I'd be happy to contribute the photograph.
Great show!

Sensational night
Tyler Reilly
Boston, USA

24th July 2008

Guy, Last night's concert in Central Park had the makings of something out of the Old Testament -- though the rain miraculously held off until a half-hour after the show ended, lightning lit up the sky from 9:00 onward. During Marbletown, the music seemed to be egging the storm on, challenging it to land in full force; the whole thing seemed downright cosmic. Speaking of Marbletown, I was positively blown away by the arrangement (Hill Farmer's Blues, too) and feel last night's show was the best of yours I have seen. Simply mind-blowing from the first note to the last. I couldn't make the show in Boston, so I took a couple days off work, hopped on a bus and am so thrilled I did. As ever, thank you for maintaining such a great link to your loyal fans, and I look forward to the next time you're in town. Regards, Tyler Thanks Tyler, most eloquently put. A fantastic evening and a very lucky scenario as if it rained heavily the show could potentially have been abandoned.
MK speakers
Peter Denissen
holland

24th July 2008

Dear Guy, I have two questions concerning guitar loudspeakers. 1) What speakers does MK use live and studio? I've seen the red Marshall cabinets, but what's inside them and how are they miced? Muliple mics, closed miking etc... 2) I' ve just build a speaker isolation cabinet so that I can put my speaker cabinet inside this wooden, isolated box and mic it to play along or to record and not annoy the neighbours. What guitar speaker would you equip the cabinet with when it's inside such a cabinet? I'm looking for the MK les paul tone. Tone is far more important than volume, in fact, I want to keep the volume down as much as possible so that I won't upset the neighbours. Regards Peter Denissen Mark uses MANY different cabs and speaker combinations so there's no simple answer to this. Celestions or EV's in the 4x12's though.

I know this is your tour diary, but I would like to comment some thing that I've readed in Richard's diary. In his entry for Vienna (Virginia) gig, he says that in your day off in NY he went with some friends to a Cuban Restaurant called Victor's Cafe. I´m very surprised because I was there last summer and I can confirm it, it's delicious! I recommend "Ropa Vieja". And Guy, if you can, go there. Bye. Yes, we went there last time and I'm sure Richard returned.

Wolftrap
BPDNEDCID
Pennsylvania, USA

24th July 2008

Dear Doc, Last night at Wolftrap was something akin to a religious experience for me, my Wife, her Mother and my Dad's Wife... the latter two never having experienced a Mark Knopfler concert in person before. Both women, in their sixties and rocking to this day, were simply blown away. As for my Wife and I, we both agreed that we have never seen a Mark Knopfler performance - either in person or on video - that rivaled what we witnessed last night. Did you hear us roaring? I mean ALL of us! Every person in attendance was lifted, moved, scorched and stained by the music. I am still trying to rub the scent of Mark's burning guitar work from my skin. I could go on and on, but I won't. I have written a "Gig Review" of the show and posted it to Mark's Official Website Forum. You can view it here: http://www.markknopfler.com/forums/ShowThread.aspx?PostID=6431#6431 I beseech you to take a few moments and read the Review. You guys deserve to know just how deeply you have touched our lives. I hope my words did the performance justice. Thanks for the one of a kind show. It makes waiting for Saturday night that much harder. Oh, and by the way: Picked up a copy of INAMORATA at the show, just as I planned. Listened to it all the way home today. Simple amazing. Peaceful and timeless... like a well worn Steely Dan record only better. You have the voice of an angel. Well done my friend! Peace. BPDNEDCID "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. I will be hoping that this letter finds you... and finds you well." Yep, very nice except that the guy who demanded his money back after seeing JESCA HOOP is an imbecile. A great show indeed.
Analog for Vinyl?
Richard
NC

24th July 2008

Hi Doc! I want to Bravo! to you and the guy's for a terific show in Chicago and I can't wait to see you again in Charlotte this Sunday. But this is a non-tour question. As an audiophile, I have been renewing my love for vinyl over the past few years (one of my greatest mistakes was dumping hundreds of LPs back in the 80's - arghh - the horror!). In recent times, MK's been releasing vinyl again, with such titles as Brothers In Arms, Shangri-La, All The RoadRunning, Kill To Get Crimson, and the compilation Best of DS & MK. All have been put out on the glorious big black disks. So my question; when mastering these for vinyl release, were the analog masters used? Or like some newer bands who don't record in analog, are digital masters used? I'm sure you can guess my preference. Thanks! In a word Richard, yes.

Songs rehearsed but not played
Frederic
Franche Comté

23rd July 2008

Hi Doc, Now that the tour is close to its end, could you tell what song you rehearsed but never played during concerts? Do you think that songs from All The Roadrunning can be played by Mark without Emmy? I ask this question because I think that the live version of I Dug Up A Diamond is such a beautiful guitar duet between Mark and Richard... I hope you'll enjoy your holidays, you'll need some rest after this exciting but tiring tour ! Fred Sorry Fred, if I did that, I'd open up an unwanted discussion topic.

23rd July 2008

Dear Mr. Fletcher, I would like to ask about Franklins live rig, if you indeed do know anything about it. Especially wich compressor and the cabinet speakersize (inches). Maybe he even used different rigs when playing with the Hillbillies as opposed to the On Every Street concerts. And... is there any FX or preamps between the steelguitaroutput and the volumepedal. Thanks for the music... Sincerely, Leif Bruun Sorry Leif, No idea mate

Hi Doc,i`ve got a question about a subject that hasn`t been on the forum yet.I don`t know wether you are going to react on it but`I`ll try and if you don`t,then you just simply don`t...;<)This great band and everyone around it is also a big ``company`` in a way. Most of the crew working for`` MK inc.`` will be on a pay-roll I think. But what about the bandmembers?Do they take shares on profits or do they have a salary as well? And does it work the same when making an album with them?I`m just curious about how those things work in the music bussiness,oké!!!Cheers,Rob Sorry, I'm not discussing wage structures on this site.
Crowd noise
Patrick Sullivan
near Syracuse

23rd July 2008

You and the band put on a great show in Syracuse Sunday night. Some members of the audience, however, seemed to hoot and holler every time the band reduced their volume for a portion of a song. It prevented me from hearing everything produced on stage, and I ask if such interruptions are distracting to you and the band on stage? I wish I could've held up a big sign that said "SHHHH"! Thanks for coming to Syracuse! No Patrick, not really since nowdays we use the in-ear monitors. We sure take the volume down so I could easily understand that it could be tricky to hear. Some venues are absolutely silent during these passages.

MARKS GUITAR PICK?
RICK LAKE
THE GREEK - LA

23rd July 2008

Guy hope everything is well with you. A quick question or two. Until I sat so close, I didn't realize that Mark doesn't use a pick of any sort or at least that I noticed. 1) Does he ever? 2) Is there any other info that you could provide regarding this subject? At the end of the show and I had the pleasure to be able to shake Marks hand, even though it wasn't aggressive in any way it was the strongest hand I have ever shook, his hand was all tight muscle. Thanks for the forum and all the insights that you provide. Sincerely Rick Lake Yes Rick, Mar does use a pick for strumming acoustics and he uses one on Shangri-la I believe, with the red Strat.

Hello Guy, fabulous show in Edmonton on July 7. I have now seen my two favorite artists (MK and Blue Rodeo) in the fabulous sounding Jubilee Auditorium in a matter of a few months. I believe you guys stayed over in our fair city for a few days, what were your thoughts? Did you get out and about at all? Did you stay at the Hotel MacDonald over looking the river valley? Thanks again for everything you do for the fans, it is a real pleasure to follow this and past tours with you and Richard B. All the best to you and have a great and well desrved vacation after the tour. Yes, Edmonton was nice. I didn't get out much but we had a ncie stay. Thanks

Inamorata
Kami Miller

22nd July 2008

Hi Guy, Wanted to let you know how much pleasure your new release brings. As with the MK solo material, I'm giving it its due in terms of frequent spins, allowing it to unfold on its own terms. You must be very proud, as well you should be. [Just to share with you, I've written many dozens of tunes over my lifetime, and appreciate the efforts of soul and discipline that go into creating something out of nothing, and the gift of satisfaction when someone cares enough to take the time to get into the work.] Anyway, I really like it. Kudos to you, and hope it spurs you to continue, as there is nothing quite like the feeling of birthing and then raising a new tune. Question: Were there any songs on the CD that took a totally different turn when you got to working with others on it? Also, how many - if any - other tunes did you consider for this release, but perhaps excluded for some reason or another? Thanks, and see you soonish. Thanks Kami, glad you're enjoying it. There were about 20 songs or so that were in contention. I think you need at least that in order to keep the standards up (well I do anyway) There were plenty that took on a life of their own once the ball got rolling.

Hey, Doc, thanks for the forum, the photos and the vids. Oh, BTW, thanks for the fantastic music, too. I saw KTGC in Toronto, it was awesome! Just so you know: I think you are one very talented Guy—just rolling in the stuff—you’d make a very good filmmaker. And thanks for showing another side of D. Sullivan. On stage he can seem a bit stern, or shy, I don’t know. But he really is a charming, kind man. Oh, and again, thank you. With greatest respect and best regards to all, Teresa. Thanks Teresa

hi doc, did you check out your own wiki entry? (or did you write it all, lol) anyways, i learned that you have a performing son. did that EP really get "released" the way your cd did? and how did the son sell, compared to the father? Rgrds p.s no golden heart US tour ever happened. now as to the reason..... I did check it out a while ago, no I didn't write it. No Max doesn't have a record deal. Can't recall the GH tour.

22nd July 2008

A question for Danny: Hi Danny, I´m enjoying with your work at drums, a lot of power and feeling. But I have a question about your origin with percussion. Do you started directly with percussion? Or first you played drums and changed to percussion? If your response is the second, why did you change? Thanks Danny (and thank you Guy) I happen to know Carles that Danny started on percussion way before taking on the drums.

Ensemble
Julie
Salt Lake City

22nd July 2008

Firstly, thank you for Inamorata. It takes me back to a less hectic time in my life—a trip I’m happy to take over and over. Secondly, it’s been four weeks now since the Salt Lake City concert and the memories of Marbletown still wow me. Thirdly, I’ve had the opportunity to see a few MK concerts in the post-DS days. This time around it seems to be more of a complete ensemble. Each of you is given a moment in the spotlight. And it was magical before! So does it feel more like an ensemble to you? What makes this band align so well? ~Julie It just feels like a great band to play with. There's a magical element that I won't try to analyze.

Were you disappointed with the Ottawa crowd?
Mark Sirois
Montreal, Canada

22nd July 2008

Hi Guy, This was my 4th time seeing Mark and the band play (twice in Montreal and twice in Ottawa). I noticed that some songs were left out of the setlist (Postcards, Shangri-La). I was wondering if Mark decided to cut the setlist short because Ottawa was more of a "listening" crowd and less on their feet. I thought you guys did a fabulous job but was looking forward to hearing both of the songs that I mentioned. Maybe Mark was upset because some idiots in the crowd heckled the opening act?? Anyway, I hope this is not your last time touring this area. Also, I noticed in the last 3 tours, Mark has decided to skip Montreal twice. Is there a reason? Montreal has always been a great Straits/Knopfler town. Do we tax you guys too much? Thanks in advance for your response. Mark no, no particular reason at all. Don't read anything into it just one song less..

22nd July 2008

hi doc- i was at the sunday show in syracuse and thought the band played better than i've ever heard. i've seen all of mark's solo tours and i'm not sure what, if anything, has changed, but the sound was the best i've heard. i still remember the on every street tour production being one of the best sounding live shows i've ever attended and the show last night just as good. i'm a musician myself and i think it just makes a show much more enjoyable when the production is that good. please give you foh guy a big thumbs up for me! will do Kevin, cheers
